My family hate our baby's name and won't stop saying so

We announced our son's name last week. It's a slightly unusual one, from my husband's side, it has a lovely meaning and we both love it.

My dad said "he'll get bullied". My aunt asked if we'd "still got time to change it". My mum keeps calling him by a nickname she made up that's nothing to do with his actual name.

He's eight days old. I'm exhausted and every time someone criticises it I want to cry. How do I make them stop?

Speaking as an aunty: your aunt is out of order. Just say "we love it, it's decided" and change the subject every single time. They'll get bored eventually.

My son's name raised eyebrows too. Now he's 6 and there are three other boys in his class with unusual names. London playgrounds are wonderfully diverse. He'll be fine.

Dad here. My parents did the exact same thing when we named our daughter. What worked was me (not my wife) telling them firmly once that the topic was closed. They stopped. Might be worth your husband doing the same with his in-laws as well as his own family.

Mo, I think that's it. When I say it they think I'm emotional because I've just had a baby. If my husband says it, they'll listen. Annoying but true. Thank you everyone.
