Baby-led weaning vs purées - why is everyone so militant about it?

Starting weaning in a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely confused at how strongly people feel about this.

My NCT group is split right down the middle. The BLW lot make purées sound like I'm force-feeding him. The purée lot look at me like I'm handing a baby a whole steak.

Can I just do a mix? Is there a reason that's a bad idea? I just want him to eat food and enjoy it.

Mix and match. That's what most people actually do, they just don't post about it on Instagram. Mine had purées in the morning and steamed veg sticks at lunch.

The militance is about identity, not food. Your baby won't remember either way. Just make sure whatever you give is soft enough to squash between your fingers if it's finger food, and sit him upright.

BLW person here and I promise I'm not militant! It worked well for us. But I have friends whose babies just preferred spoons and that's fine too. Do whatever's less stressful for you.

Honestly, buy a big mat for under the high chair whichever you choose. BLW especially. My kitchen floor still has carrot on it from 2023.

Also doing a first aid course before you start helps with the nerves. Some of the London councils run free ones at children's centres.

Just wanted to add - it's normal for them to eat almost nothing for the first few weeks. It's about learning, not filling up. Milk is still the main thing. Don't panic if most of it ends up on the floor.

My kid refused everything except broccoli for a month and now at 4 he won't touch broccoli. They are unpredictable creatures. Good luck!
