First cold at 9 weeks - how do you know when it's more than a cold?

Our little girl is 9 weeks and has picked up a cold, almost certainly from her brother who brings home every germ in Hackney from nursery.

Snuffly, a bit of a cough, feeding a bit less than usual. No temperature so far.

I know colds are normal. But she's so tiny and I'm lying awake listening to her breathe. What were the signs that made you call someone? I don't want to be the person in A&E with a sniffle but I also don't want to miss something.

I'm a paediatric nurse but please don't treat this as advice for your specific baby. Generally, things to call 111 or your GP straight away about: feeding less than half the usual amount, far fewer wet nappies, breathing that's fast or looks like hard work (sucking in at the ribs or the bottom of the neck), pauses in breathing, a temperature of 38 or more in a baby under 3 months, or she seems floppy or unusually sleepy. If she goes blue or grey around the lips, 999.

Trust your gut. Nobody in A&E will think you're silly with a 9 week old.

Saline drops and a nasal aspirator before feeds made a real difference for our two. They can't feed and breathe through a blocked nose.
