In-laws keep giving advice that's 30 years out of date

My baby is 10 weeks old. My mother-in-law is visiting a lot (which is lovely, she's very helpful with the washing) but she keeps giving advice that I know is outdated. Putting rice cereal in his bottle so he'll sleep. Putting him on his front. Letting him "cry it out" at 10 weeks. Giving him a bit of water because "it's hot today".

I've tried saying "the advice has changed" but she says she raised three children and they're all fine.

How do I handle this without causing a family war? My husband is no help, he just says "she means well".

Grandmother here, so I'll put my hand up for the other side. We do mean well, and some of us find it very hard to hear that things we did with love are now considered dangerous. It can feel like being told you were a bad mother.

That said, safe sleep isn't negotiable. Be kind, be firm, and maybe blame the health visitor: "the health visitor was really strict about this". It takes the personal sting out of it.

I'll second that. I needed my daughter to show me the leaflets. I didn't believe her at first, then I read them and felt dreadful. Show her the evidence and let her catch up.

Your husband needs to step up here. "She means well" isn't a plan. It's his mum, it's his job to have the harder conversations.

gr8ful_grandma, thank you for that perspective. I hadn't thought about it feeling like an accusation. The health visitor thing is genius. And Bex, yes. I've told him he's doing the safe sleep conversation this weekend.

Dad here. I had to have this conversation with my own mum and it was awkward, but she took it better from me than she would've from my wife. Your husband really is the right person to do it.

Water at 10 weeks was the one that got me. Baby only needs milk at that age, even when it's hot. Health visitor confirmed it in front of my mum and that was the end of it.
