Baby group comparisons are making my anxiety so much worse

My daughter is 5 months old. I've been going to a baby group at the library every week and I've started to dread it.

Every week someone mentions something their baby is doing that mine isn't. Rolling both ways, sleeping through, holding their own bottle. I go home and google it and then spend the evening convinced something is wrong.

I've also started checking she's breathing about twenty times a night. My partner says I need to relax, which obviously helps a lot.

Is this just normal new mum stuff or should I be talking to someone?

Honestly the checking twenty times a night bit is what jumped out at me. Some checking is normal, all of us do it. But if it's taking over and you're not sleeping when you could be, please mention it to your health visitor or GP. Postnatal anxiety is so common and there's good help for it.

Baby group comparisons are poison. Half the mums are exaggerating and the other half are just as anxious as you are and comparing too.

Maybe try a different group for a bit? Somewhere with an activity, like baby sensory or a swim class, where there's less sitting around chatting about milestones.

Thank you. I think I knew the checking wasn't quite normal, I just needed someone to say it. Booked to see the GP next week.

Good. And for the record, sleeping through at 5 months is a lie told by people whose babies wake at 4:30 and they've decided that counts as morning.
