Pocket money - how much and do you link it to chores?

My kids are 7, 9 and 11 and keep asking for pocket money because "everyone else gets it." What's normal? And do you tie it to chores or just give it?

I'm torn because I don't want to pay them for things they should do anyway as part of the family, like making their bed. But I'd like them to learn money has to be earned.

We do a base amount that's just theirs (£1 per year of age per week felt too much for us, we do 50p per year of age) and then extra jobs that can earn more. Hoovering the car, washing up after Sunday dinner, that sort of thing.

Making your bed is just living here. Washing the car is a job.

We use one of those kids' debit card apps. They can see their balance and it's done wonders for my 11 year old's understanding of 'once it's gone it's gone'. He spent his first month's money on Roblox in two days and was outraged.

I'm slightly against the apps. Physical coins in a jar for the little ones is better. It's harder to understand money that's a number on a phone. My 7 year old loves counting her money out.

Make them save a portion. We do a third into a savings pot they can't touch. My eldest now has nearly £200 and is very proud.
