Hello all. We arrived four weeks ago for my husband's job. Children 5 and 8. We live in Wimbledon in a rented flat. I don't work at the moment.

Everything is new: GP, schools, where to buy normal bread. Children cry for their friends. I feel a bit lost honestly.

Please tell me what you wish someone told you when you arrived.

Register at the GP first, even if nobody is sick. It can take time. Then the school, the council has an admissions page.

Bread: try a proper bakery, not the supermarket. There are good ones everywhere if you look. Also many European shops in London, you will find your things.

Talk to other mums at school gate even if it's scary. I was very shy at first, now I have friends from five countries. London is good for this.

It took me one year to feel at home. Be kind to yourself. The first winter is the hardest, it is dark at 4pm, it is normal to feel sad.
