First Christmas on my own with the kids and I'm dreading it

Me and my ex split in the spring. We've agreed the kids are with me Christmas Eve and morning, then with him from lunchtime Boxing Day.

I keep thinking about the bit where it's just me and two kids and a chicken because a turkey for three is silly. No in-laws, my own family are in Scotland and can't travel this year. I know loads of people have it harder but I'm finding it really hard to feel festive.

Any single parents got ideas for making it feel special rather than sad?

Make new traditions that are just yours. We do Christmas pyjamas, a cinema-style film with popcorn in a big blanket fort, and the kids choose the dinner. One year it was fish fingers and roast potatoes. Honestly one of our best Christmases.

Is there a local community lunch? Ours in Leyton does one and lots of single parents go along. Kids loved it, I loved not cooking.

Single dad of two. The first one is the worst, I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I sat in the car for a bit after dropping them back on Boxing Day.

But it does get easier, and the kids remember the fun stuff, not the size of the turkey. Also, plan something for yourself for the bit when they're away. Don't just sit in an empty house.

Kofi that bit about planning something for when they're gone really hit. I hadn't even thought about that part. Going to sort something with a friend. Thanks everyone x
