Opening presents at the party - yes or no?

Genuine question because I've seen both. At my son's last party (4) we opened presents afterwards at home, and I sent thank you cards. One mum mentioned she was "a bit disappointed" she didn't get to see him open the gift they chose.

I always thought opening at the party was a recipe for chaos and comparing. What do you do?

In our family it's rude NOT to open them in front of the guests. Cultural thing I think. But at a kids party with 20 children I get why people don't.

We did a compromise once: opened presents with whoever was still around at the very end. Mostly grandparents and a couple of close friends. Worked fine.

Opening at home and then a quick video or photo of him playing with it to the parent is lovely. Covers the "I wanted to see" thing without the chaos.
