Sleepover at a house where I've never met the parents

DD (10) has been invited to a sleepover by a new friend from her dance class. I've never met the parents. They seem nice from the WhatsApp messages but I literally know nothing about them.

My husband thinks I'm being ridiculous and that it's fine. My gut says I'd like to at least meet them first. Am I being overprotective? How do others handle this?

Not overprotective at all. I always do the drop off myself and have a proper chat on the doorstep, and I'll suggest a coffee beforehand if I don't know them at all. Most parents totally get it because they'd do the same.

Totally reasonable. We also ask a couple of questions straight out - who else will be in the house, are there older siblings, any pets. Said in a friendly way nobody minds.

We have a "late-over" rule until about 11 or 12 - she goes for the party, pizza and film, and we pick her up at 10pm in pyjamas. She gets 90% of the fun and I get my peace of mind. Nobody has ever been offended.

One thing we've also done is agree a code word with our daughter. If she texts it, we come and get her, no questions asked, and we make up an excuse so she doesn't look silly. Never been used, but she knows it's there.

your husband's not wrong that it's probably fine, and you're not wrong to want to meet them. both can be true. meet them, then let her go.

Update: messaged the mum, she invited me in for a cup of tea at drop off, lovely family, older brother is at uni. DD went for the late-over version anyway and had a great time. Thanks all, code word has been agreed too.
