Was told to come back later three times in early labour. Is this normal?

Had my baby at the Homerton seven weeks ago (all fine, healthy boy, I'm mostly recovered). Something I keep thinking about though.

I rang triage three times and each time they said contractions weren't close enough, stay home, have a bath, paracetamol. When I finally went in I was already quite far along and the midwife said 'oh you're nearly there!' as if I should be pleased.

I don't think anyone did anything wrong exactly, but I felt very alone at home and quite scared. Is this just how it is?

It's very common, sadly. They want you at home as long as possible in early labour because things often slow down in hospital. But it can feel like being dismissed, and you're allowed to feel upset about it even though it worked out.

Same at a different hospital. I think what would have helped me is if someone told me in advance exactly what 'go in' looks like. My antenatal class said one thing and the phone said another.

Some hospitals offer a birth reflections or debrief service where you can go through your notes with a midwife. Might be worth asking your health visitor about. I did one after my first and it really helped me make peace with some bits.

For anyone reading this before their own birth: if you feel something is wrong, or you simply can't cope at home, you can say that clearly on the phone. 'I'm not coping' is a valid reason to be seen. I wish I'd known that.
