Phones being banned in schools - good thing or not?

My son's secondary has just brought in a full phone ban. Phones go in a locked pouch from the moment they arrive until they leave. Some parents are furious about not being able to contact their kids.

I'm actually quite pleased - but am I missing something? What's your school doing?

From the teaching side, lunchtimes in schools that have done this are noticeably different. Kids actually talk to each other and play football again. Fewer fights that start online and spill over.

My worry is for kids with anxiety who use their phone to message a parent when they're overwhelmed. There needs to be a proper alternative for those kids.

That's fair, Lina. Our school says kids can go to student services and call home from there, but whether they'd actually feel able to do that is another question.
