Caught my 14yo using AI to write his history essay

My son has a history essay due. I noticed he'd finished it in 15 minutes and it was... very polished. Turns out he'd used an AI chatbot. He says "everyone does it" and that the teachers can't tell.

I'm not anti-technology, I use these tools at work myself. But I'm not sure where the line is. Is it cheating? How are other parents handling this?

I'd ask him to explain the essay to you, in his own words, without looking. If he can't, he hasn't learnt anything and that's the real problem, not the tool.

Teacher again: we can usually tell. Not always from the writing, but because the kid can't answer a single question about it in class. Many schools now have explicit policies about this - check his.

We let our daughter use it to explain concepts and quiz her, but never to write anything she hands in. A bit like having a patient tutor. I think that's a reasonable line.

The world they're going into will be full of these tools. I'd rather mine learned how to use it well than pretended it doesn't exist. But writing the whole essay isn't using it well.

We agreed he rewrites it himself tonight, using the AI only to quiz him on the topic first. Grumbled a lot but the new version is clearly his and honestly not bad.
