Year 6 SATs - is anyone else's school going overboard?

My daughter is in Year 6 and it's only October but there are already SATs booster sessions before school, weekly practice papers, and homework is all SATs prep. She's started saying she's "bad at maths" and she's anxious.

I thought SATs were about measuring the school, not the child? Am I wrong to want them to calm it down?

You're not wrong. SATs results don't go anywhere for secondary - your daughter's secondary place doesn't depend on them. Tell her that directly, it can really lower the stakes.

Some secondaries use them for setting in Year 7, but they'll also do their own tests in September. So it's really not life or death.

Our school went the same way. I just opted my son out of the before school booster - it was 8am starts, he was exhausted. Nobody said a word.

the teachers are under so much pressure, it's not really their fault. but it does trickle down to the kids. i'd ask for a chat about her anxiety specifically and see what they say

Our school did a lovely thing after SATs - a week of camping, a play, and no homework until summer. Something for her to look forward to. Maybe ask if they've got something like that planned.
