Kid called my son a homophobic slur at school - what now?

My son is 12. A boy in his class called him a homophobic slur in front of the class, apparently because my son likes musical theatre. The teacher heard it and sent the other boy out, but that was the end of it as far as we know.

My son is pretending he's not bothered. I'm not pretending. How hard should I push the school on this?

Push. Schools have to record and deal with prejudice-related incidents. Ask what's been done and whether it's been logged. It's not about getting the other boy excluded, it's about the school making it clear it's not acceptable.

I'd also gently check in with your son about how it actually felt, and tell him - whoever he turns out to be - you've got his back. Kids pick up a lot from how we react to these words.

My daughter's school did a restorative meeting with both kids after something similar. She was sceptical but the other girl apologised properly and they're actually fine now. Might be worth asking if they do that.

Spoke to the Head of Year - it has been logged, the other boy's parents were called in, and there's going to be a PSHE session for the whole year group. My son is in the school production in December, very much not dropping it.
