Starting IVF on the NHS after two years of trying - what do I actually need to know?

We finally got our referral through after two years of trying and a lot of tests. First appointment at the fertility clinic is in three weeks and I feel like I know absolutely nothing.

My GP was lovely but basically said "they'll explain everything there". I've read so much online that I've confused myself. Down-regulation, stimming, egg collection, freeze-all... it's like learning a new language.

For those who've done NHS IVF in London, what do you wish someone had told you before the first appointment? Anything to ask, anything to bring, anything to prepare for emotionally? We're in Lewisham if that makes any difference to which clinic.

Take a notebook. Honestly. They give you so much information in that first appointment and you will forget half of it the second you leave.

Also ask exactly how many funded cycles your borough's ICB covers, because it varies across London and nobody volunteers that info. Ours was one full cycle including any frozen transfers from it.

We did two rounds, second one worked (hence the username!).

The thing nobody told me: the waiting is worse than the injections. I was so scared of the needles and they turned out to be fine, a tiny pinch. The two week wait after transfer nearly finished me off though.

Plan nice things for that fortnight. Cinema, walks, anything to get you out of your own head.

Ask about the timeline for the counselling session. Most clinics offer one as part of the package and I nearly skipped it. Really glad I didn't, it was the one hour in the whole process that was about us rather than my ovaries.

Practical one: the scans are often early morning and at short notice. If you have a commute and a manager, have a vague conversation with HR early so you're not making up dentist appointments every other day.

Good luck. Two years is a long road to get here.

Thank you all, this is so helpful. Notebook bought (a nice one, treating myself). I'll ask about the funded cycles, I genuinely didn't know it differed by area.

TwinsAndTea, already planning a cinema list for the 2ww in case we get that far.

Late to this but one more: write down your partner's questions too. Mine sat there nodding and then asked me twenty questions on the bus home that I couldn't answer. Best of luck x

Also ask if your husband needs blood tests too. We went to first appointment and only then they told us he needs his bloods done as well, so we lost two more weeks waiting. Small thing but annoying when you already waited so long.
