When did you tell work you were pregnant, and how did it go?

I'm 14 weeks and haven't told work yet. I work in a busy agency and we're in the middle of a big pitch. My boss is a man in his 50s who has made a few comments in the past about "people always going off on mat leave at the worst time".

I'm starting to show and can't hide behind oversized jumpers much longer. When did you tell, and did you do it in writing or face to face?

Legally you need to tell them by the 15th week before your due date, so you've got time. But once you're showing, I think it's better on your terms than them guessing.

I did it face to face and followed up with an email the same day so there was a record. Would recommend.

Ask for your risk assessment at the same time. People forget about it but your employer has to do one. It's also a nice way to show you know your rights without making it a confrontation.

Update for anyone who finds this later: told him Monday, followed up by email. He said "congratulations" in a tone like I'd crashed his car, but HR were great and I've got my risk assessment booked. Onwards!

Also check your contract or staff handbook for enhanced maternity pay, and whether you need a minimum length of service for it. Mine was much better than statutory and I only found out because I asked.
