Birth trauma - 8 months on and I still can't talk about it

My daughter is 8 months old. Her birth was very fast and very frightening, and there was a moment when I genuinely thought one of us wasn't going to make it. We both did, she's healthy and wonderful.

But I can't drive past the hospital. When anyone asks about the birth I say "oh, it was quick!" and change the subject. I get flashbacks at night, usually when I'm feeding her in the dark.

Everyone keeps saying "at least you're both healthy". I know. I know that. I don't know why I can't get over it.

Has anyone got help for this? I don't even know who to ask.

What you're describing sounds a lot like birth trauma, and it's really common and really treatable. Please speak to your GP or health visitor. They can refer you to the perinatal mental health service. I had therapy for exactly this and the flashbacks stopped within a few months.

"At least you're both healthy" is said with good intentions and it does so much damage. Being alive doesn't cancel out being terrified.

Most hospital trusts also run a birth reflections or birth afterthoughts service where you can go through your notes with a midwife. For me it filled in so many gaps. A lot of the fear was the bits I didn't understand.

I've just read these to my husband and cried again, but the good kind this time. I'll ring the GP tomorrow. I didn't know any of this existed.

You might also find it helps to write it down. Not for anyone else to read. Just to get it out of your head and onto paper. My therapist suggested it and it was harder than I thought, but it helped.

Update, a few weeks on: saw the GP, she was brilliant and referred me straight away. I've had my first two sessions and I've got the birth reflections appointment next month. Still early days but I drove past the hospital yesterday and only had to pull over once. Small wins. Thank you all.
