Dad's birth story - nobody tells you about the bit after

Mostly women posting birth stories here so thought I'd add a dad's one.

Wife went into labour on a Sunday night. Labour itself was long but fairly straightforward. I did what I was told: held hands, fetched ice, got shouted at for chewing too loudly. Our daughter arrived at 6am. Amazing, life-changing, all of that.

The bit nobody prepared me for was about an hour later. My wife started bleeding heavily and the room filled up with people in about thirty seconds. Somebody gave me the baby and pointed me to a chair in the corner, and for about forty minutes I sat holding my daughter with no idea what was happening to my wife.

She was fine. They sorted it, she had a transfusion, she was home two days later. But I still think about that chair.

Not really asking anything. Just think dads should know it's ok if that kind of thing sticks with you.

Thanks for posting this mate. Similar experience with our first, they whisked my wife to theatre and I was left in the corridor with the baby. Never talked to anyone about it until about a year later. Wish I had sooner.

The chair in the corner. Yes. Same here. I'd add that you can ask your GP for support too. It's not just for mums. I didn't think I was "allowed" to struggle when she was the one who'd been through it.

As a mum who was the one bleeding, I can tell you my husband's experience of it was worse than mine in some ways. I was out of it. He was watching. Thank you for saying this out loud.

Appreciate it everyone. Marco, that's exactly the feeling, like I didn't have the right to be shaken by it. Might actually mention it at my next GP appointment.
