Dads get depressed too - struggling since my son was born

Not easy to type this. My son is 5 months old. Since he was born I've been angry a lot. Short fuse at work, snapping at my wife, not sleeping even when I could. I go to the pub after work just to put off getting home, which isn't me.

I didn't think dads could get postnatal depression. I've read a bit and some of it sounds familiar. But I don't want to make it about me when my wife's the one who gave birth.

Mate, it's real. Something like one in ten dads get it. Anger and avoidance are really common ways it shows up in men, more than sadness. You're not making it about you. If you go under, it affects your wife and son too, so looking after yourself is looking after them.

Book your GP. Tell them exactly what you've written here.

Look up dad-specific support groups, there's a few in London and online. Andy's Man Club does Monday night peer groups for men, no pressure to talk until you want to. Helped me a lot after a bad year.

Mum here, but just to say: please tell your wife. I'd have been so relieved if my husband had told me how he was feeling, rather than me guessing why he was coming home later and later. She'll likely want to help.

And if it ever gets really bad, Samaritans 116 123, any time of day or night. Or text SHOUT to 85258 if talking is too much.

Told my wife last night. She cried, then hugged me, and said she'd noticed but didn't know how to bring it up. GP appointment booked for Monday. Thanks lads, and helena.
