We're skipping Christmas with family this year and feel weirdly guilty

Every year we do the same thing: drive to Kent for my in-laws on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day there, then to my parents in Bristol on Boxing Day. Two kids under six in the car, motorway traffic, no naps, overstimulated meltdowns, and we come home needing another holiday.

This year we've said we're staying in London. Just us four. Pancakes, a walk on the Heath, a nap, whatever we feel like. Families have been told and there's been some... frostiness.

Has anyone else done this? Did it feel worth it, or did the guilt ruin it?

We did this two years ago and it's one of the best decisions we've made. The first year there was a lot of guilt tripping. Now we visit everyone in the week between Christmas and New Year when the roads are quieter and everyone's calmer. Everyone's actually happier.

My family is Italian and Christmas is a big deal, so when we said we were staying in London for one year my mother didn't speak to me for about ten days. She came round. We video called during lunch and she cried, but in a good way.

The kids loved it. We still talk about it. Do it.

Just to offer the other side: my dad died two years after a year we'd skipped. I don't regret much but I do think about that one. Not trying to guilt you, just saying weigh it up.

JaneEyreFan, I'm sorry, and thank you for saying it. It is something I've thought about. My parents are fairly young and healthy but we've offered to go down in early December to do a proper early Christmas with them, so hopefully that helps.
