20 months and only about 5 words. Should I be worried?

My daughter is 20 months. She says mama, dada, "ba" for ball, "da" for dog, and "no" (obviously). She understands loads, follows simple instructions, points to things, waves, is very social.

My friend's boy of the same age is saying sentences. The 2 year review is in a few months. Should I be pushing for something now? We speak Russian and English at home, if that matters.

Bilingual mum here (Hungarian and English). Bilingual kids often have a smaller vocabulary IN EACH language early on, but if you add both together it's usually normal. Count words in both languages. Also, the understanding and pointing you describe are really good signs.

I'm a speech and language therapist (not your child's, obviously, so take this as general info). The things we look at at this age are: does she understand, does she point and share attention, does she copy sounds and gestures, is her hearing ok. It sounds like you're ticking most of that. You can usually self-refer to your local NHS SLT service, many boroughs have drop-ins. It's never a waste of time to ask.

My son had 6 words at 2. He's 4 now and won't stop talking. He was just saving it all up. Not saying that's always how it goes, but it happens a lot.

Get her hearing checked too. Our son had glue ear and it was making everything muffled. Grommets and he went from 10 words to 50 in a couple of months.

Update: went to the drop-in at our children's centre. They said she's at the lower end but within range given bilingual and good understanding. Recommended lots of narrating, songs and giving choices ("milk or water?"). They'll check again in 3 months. Relieved.
