Am I a terrible parent for the restaurant iPad?

Bit of a confession thread. We have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. When we go out to eat, which is rare and precious, the 4 year old gets the iPad with headphones. We get to eat a hot meal and have a conversation.

Last weekend a couple at the next table made a pointed comment about "iPad kids" and "in our day we had colouring". My wife was upset, I was fuming.

Are we raising a screen zombie or is this fine? He has maybe 45 mins a day otherwise, mostly at the weekend.

Headphones on, kid quiet, not bothering anyone. That couple should mind their own lunch.

The kids I worry about are the ones with the tablet blaring at full volume on the Tube. That's the actual problem, not the device.

I'll be the slightly contrary voice. We deliberately don't do screens at the table, because I think restaurants are where they learn to sit, wait, chat and be bored. It's a skill. It took ages and some meals were grim. But at 6 now she's genuinely good company out.

Not judging you though. Different families, different priorities.

We do a halfway house. Colouring and chat until the food comes, then screen only if things go south. Usually we never get to the screen.

The "in our day" people had kids who ran around pubs unsupervised with a bag of scampi fries while the adults drank. Every generation has its thing.
