What do adults most underestimate about young kids?

Inspired by my 7 year old, who overheard me on the phone to my sister a week ago saying I was worried about money, and then quietly offered me her pocket money tin this morning.

I genuinely didn't think she'd been listening, let alone understood. Gutted and touched in equal measure.

What do you think grown-ups underestimate about kids?

How well they can handle the truth when it's explained simply. We were told not to tell our 6 year old about her grandad's illness. When we did, she coped better than half the adults.

@FinsburyFran this one hit home. We cancelled half of Saturday's plans and had a sofa day. Nicest weekend in months.

And to update: I thanked my daughter and told her the grown-ups are sorting it, it's not her job to worry. She seemed relieved. I've also learned to take phone calls in the garden.
