Grandparents keep ignoring our screen time rules

My in-laws have our two (5 and 7) every Friday after school. We have a pretty firm rule of an hour of screens max on weekdays. At theirs it's the TV on from pickup until we arrive at 6:30, plus my father-in-law's phone.

We've asked nicely twice. They nod and then do it anyway. I'm grateful for the free childcare, which makes it awkward. How do I push back without causing a family rift?

Grandma here, so I'll give you the view from the other side. Those Fridays are tiring for us too. After school children are shattered and the TV is the easiest way to get a quiet hour. It isn't meant as disrespect.

Maybe suggest something else they can do together: baking, a board game, a library trip. If you give them an alternative, rather than a rule, they're more likely to go along with it.

@gr8ful_grandma that's genuinely helpful, I hadn't thought about how tiring it is for them. I think I've been treating it as defiance.

We have the grandchildren on Wednesdays and we agreed a "Granny rules" day with our daughter. It's understood that some things are different at ours, within limits. Perhaps agree what really matters (no phones, nothing unsuitable) and let the rest go.

Spoke to them on Sunday. Told them how much the kids love Fridays and how grateful we are. Suggested a baking box we'd provide. FIL said phones are off, TV is fine after baking. Everyone happy. Thank you, especially the grandmas.
