My son was the only one in his class not invited to a party

He's 6, Year 1. Found out today because the other boys were talking about it at pickup, and he came out and asked me why he wasn't going to Leo's party. It's a whole class thing at a trampoline park. Every boy except him, as far as I can tell.

He's not a difficult kid. He's a bit quiet. I had to keep it together in the playground and then cried in the car.

Do I say anything to the parent? Is it possible it got lost? I don't know whether I'm hurt for him or for me.

Honestly I'd assume it got lost first. Invites shoved in book bags get lost constantly. Our son's invite once turned up three weeks later inside his PE kit.

A friendly "hi, think we might have missed an invite" message isn't weird. If it's deliberate, you'll know from the reply.

Hurting for both of you is completely normal. When they're little, their pain feels physical.

If it does turn out to be deliberate, try to arrange something fun with him on the day. Not as a "consolation", just a nice day with you. Kids remember the fun more than the snub.

I'm going to be a bit blunt. Sometimes the birthday child chooses and they leave out someone for reasons that make sense only to a six year old. That's harsh but it's not a verdict on your son. Don't go in hot.

Sent a casual message to the mum. Turns out the invite was emailed through the class list and our email was wrong on it. She was mortified and he's now going. I feel a bit silly for the tears but very relieved.

Good outcome. Mine only see me every other weekend and I've definitely missed things because invites go to his mum. Lesson learnt, ask early.
