I'm making a list for a friend who's just moved here with a 2 year old. Which free London museums are actually good with tiny ones, and which are a nightmare of glass cases and "don't touch"?

My picks: V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green (now Young V&A) - brilliant. National Maritime in Greenwich - the play area is ace.

Horniman again (I know, everyone says it). The hands-on base is great. Also the London Transport Museum isn't free for adults but kids go free and it's toddler heaven, buses to climb in.

Museum of London Docklands has a kids' gallery called Mudlarks that's perfect for 2-5 year olds. Free, quiet midweek, rarely crowded.

National Gallery do baby and toddler sessions sometimes. Took mine at 18 months, she pointed at a horse painting and shouted HORSE for 10 minutes. Very proud.

@pebblesandpuddles ha, yes, I took my 4 year old once and had a very long chat on the bus home about skeletons.
