Pumpkin picking outside London: lovely day out or a muddy queue for a £12 pumpkin?

Every year my feed fills up with pictures of children in wellies sitting on hay bales with giant pumpkins and every year I think 'that looks magical'. Then I remember the train fare to somewhere in Kent or Surrey with a 2 and 4 year old and a buggy.

Has anyone done it this year? Was it worth it? Honest reviews please, including the bit where someone needs a wee in the middle of a field.

Did one in Kent last Sunday. Lovely for about 45 minutes. Then 90 minutes queuing to pay, kids fighting over who carries the pumpkin, and a pumpkin that cost more than our lunch.

Would I do it again? Annoyingly yes. The photos are great.

Check whether you need to book a slot in advance, a lot of them do now and the slots go fast. Also pack a full change of clothes. Full. Down to socks.

Went Wednesday morning by train, booked slot, two changes of clothes. Exactly one wee in a hedge, one tantrum over a gourd, and a 4 year old who told everyone at nursery she 'picked the pumpkin from the ground with her own hands'. Worth it. Next year grumpy_but_kind's version though maybe.
