Childminder or nursery for a very shy 1 year old?

Trying to decide between a lovely childminder five minutes away (she has 3 other little ones, one of them her own) and a big-ish nursery near my office in Farringdon.

My daughter is really clingy and takes ages to warm up to people. My gut says childminder but my partner thinks nursery is more 'reliable' because there's always someone there if staff are ill.

What did you go for and would you choose the same again?

Childminder for both of mine until 3, then pre-school. For a shy baby I really think a home setting with the same face every day is gold. The reliability thing is real though, ours had maybe 4 or 5 days off a year and we had to scramble.

Nursery here and no regrets. Our boy was shy too and honestly the bigger group brought him out of himself. Different kids, different needs.

One thing nobody tells you: nursery near the office means a sick baby on the tube with you at rush hour, and on days you work from home you're schlepping into town anyway. Think hard about that.

My sister used a childminder and the best bit was the childminder took them to the library, the park, the shops. Proper normal life. My nephew knew every dog on the street.

In Hungary we mostly have state creches so I didn't know childminders here. We tried one and it was very warm, like a grandmother. For my shy son it was right. Only problem was holidays, she took three weeks in August and we had to plan.

We went to see the childminder again and my daughter crawled straight over to her toy kitchen and ignored me for twenty minutes. Think that's our answer. Thank you all.
