Missed sports day again because of work - feeling awful

I missed my son's sports day today because of a client meeting I couldn't move. He's 8. He came home and said "it's fine mummy" in a sad little voice and I feel like the worst parent alive.

Does the guilt ever go away? How do other working parents cope with this stuff?

Ask him to tell you everything about it over dinner - every race, who won. Then he gets to be the expert telling you the story. My daughter loved doing that.

From the kid's side - I remember my dad missing almost everything. What I remember more is him being grumpy when he was there. Being present when you're present matters more.

I put school dates in my work calendar as soon as they come out now, as busy. Doesn't catch everything but it's cut it way down.

He talked for about 45 minutes about the egg and spoon race. I'm putting next year's date in my diary the second it's published.
