I asked for compressed hours (4 days a week, longer days) so I can do school pick-ups twice a week. My employer refused, saying it "doesn't suit the business". No real explanation.

I know the law changed so you can ask from day one, but can they just say no like that? Anyone been through an appeal?

They can refuse but only for one of a set of business reasons, and they have to consult with you before refusing. If they just sent a one-line no, that's worth pushing back on. ACAS has a clear guide on this.

Ask for a meeting to discuss it. Come in with a proposal for how the work would get covered, and maybe suggest a trial period of 3 months. A trial is very hard for a reasonable manager to say no to.

I appealed and won. The key was showing that my role had already been done compressed by someone else in a different team. Precedent is hard to argue with.

Update: asked for a meeting and proposed a three month trial. They've agreed! Starting in January. Thank you for the push - I nearly just accepted the no.

Brilliant news. Tip for the trial: keep a simple log of what you get done each week, any feedback, anything that went well. When the review comes round you want facts, not just your manager's general impression.
