SPD at 30 weeks and the commute is finishing me off

Pelvic girdle pain started around 24 weeks and it's now getting really bad. Getting on and off the Tube, standing on the escalators, even turning over in bed is agony.

I've got the baby on board badge but at rush hour people either don't see it or pretend not to.

Midwife has referred me to physio but the waiting list is five weeks. Anything that's helped you in the meantime?

Ask TfL for the priority seating card as well as the badge, it's more obvious. And honestly, just ask. "Excuse me, could I have that seat, I'm pregnant." 9 out of 10 people jump up looking mortified.

Pillow between the knees in bed. Keep your knees together when getting out of bed or a car, swing them as one. Sounds silly but it made a big difference.

Also take smaller steps. And no lifting one leg at a time to put on trousers, sit down to do it.

Can you talk to work about changing your hours so you travel outside rush hour, or working from home a few days a week? With a doctor's note or midwife letter most employers will do something.

Smaller steps and putting trousers on sitting down, never thought about either. Asked my manager about later hours and she said yes straight away, so I'm now on 10 til 6. Tube is so much calmer at half nine.

Also ask the physio team if you can self-refer for a support belt in the meantime. Mine wasn't a miracle but it took the edge off walking. Hope it eases after birth like it did for me, it went within about two weeks.

When the physio appointment finally comes, go even if you're feeling a bit better by then. They gave me exercises I still do and it made the last few weeks much more manageable.
