AIBU to not tell my mum we're trying for a baby?

My mum is wonderful but she cannot keep anything to herself. When I got engaged half of the extended family knew within an hour, including relatives abroad.

We've just started trying. My husband thinks I should tell her because she'll be hurt if she finds out later we kept it quiet. I think if I tell her I'll be getting texts every month asking if my period's come.

Am I being unreasonable keeping it from her?

Speaking as a mum and grandmother: no, you're not. I'd have been hurt to be left out of a pregnancy announcement, but trying is private. That's between you and your husband.

Tell her when there's something to tell. She'll be too excited to be cross.

We told both mums and I regretted it within a month. Every phone call ended with "anything to tell me?" Took us eight months and I felt like I was failing an exam on a monthly basis. Keep it quiet.

Slightly different view - I told my mum and she was a real support when it took a while. But my mum is a vault. Sounds like yours isn't. You know her best.

Ha, "special kind of torture" is exactly it. Showed my husband this thread and he's come round. Mum will find out when there's a scan photo.

Husband's view. I'd probably have been on your husband's side at first. But the one thing I'd say is make sure nobody else in the family finds out before your mum does. That's the bit that really hurts, not being kept out of the trying.
