Brother-in-law vapes indoors and says it's fine near the baby

Not me, my wife's brother, but I'm asking for the house rules.

Brother-in-law is staying with us for a few weeks while he sorts a flat. He vapes constantly, including indoors and sometimes while holding our 4 month old. When I asked him to go outside he said vaping isn't smoking, it's just water vapour, and it's fine.

My wife says I'm being a bit dramatic. I'm not sure I am. What do other people do?

Not dramatic. It isn't just water vapour, there's nicotine and other bits in the aerosol, and the nicotine settles on surfaces and clothes. It's a lot less harmful than smoking for the person doing it, but that's not the same as safe around a baby.

Our rule is outside, and not holding the baby straight after. Same as we had for my dad's cigarettes.

Have a word with your wife first so you're on the same page, then it's a family rule not you having a go at her brother. Much easier for him to hear 'we've decided' than 'you're doing it wrong'.

Also make sure the liquids are stored up high. Nicotine liquid is really dangerous if a baby gets hold of it. Seen a scary story at our playgroup.

Spoke to my wife, she read some of this and agreed. We told him together: outside only. He grumbled but fine. Thanks all, especially the point about the liquids, hadn't thought of that.

Also worth asking him to wash his hands before picking the baby up. The residue sits on hands and clothes. A swap into a clean jumper if he's been vaping a lot sounds over the top but it's what our health visitor suggested.
