Can an average family actually afford a cinema trip anymore?

Took my two (7 and 10) and my wife to the cinema on Sunday. Four tickets, one large popcorn to share, two drinks and a bag of sweets. £74. For a 90 minute cartoon.

I'm not on the breadline but that's genuinely a lot of money for what used to be a cheap treat. How are other families doing it? Or are you just not?

Kids' clubs on Saturday mornings. A couple of the big chains do them for a few quid a ticket, older films but the kids don't care. Bring your own snacks in a backpack. We've never been told off.

Meerkat Movies (2 for 1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) through the comparison site. Also check if your local independent does cheap matinees. Ours in Walthamstow does.

We don't. We do 'cinema night' at home with a sheet over the sofa and popcorn from a £1 bag of kernels. The kids genuinely prefer it because they can pause for the toilet.

We go twice a year as a proper treat and accept it's expensive. The thing I can't do is the food. Popcorn should not cost more than the ticket. Sweets come from the pound shop in my coat pocket.

Slight disagreement: some of the smaller cinemas genuinely need that snack money to survive, the margin on tickets goes mostly to the distributors. So I do buy the popcorn at our local independent because I want it to still exist in five years. Big chains, though, smuggle away.

The Saturday morning kids' clubs are great but go early. Ours fills up by about 9.15 with every parent in the postcode who's had the same idea.
