We haven't been on a date since the baby was born (she's 3)

Just realised the last time my husband and I went out alone, just the two of us, was when I was pregnant. Our daughter is now three.

We're not unhappy exactly. We're just... flatmates who co-manage a small person. We talk about nursery pick-up and what's for tea and then we both fall asleep watching something we've seen before.

Babysitters in London are about £15 an hour plus dinner. Family is far away. How do people keep the relationship going?

We started doing 'date nights in'. Kids in bed by 7.30, phones in a drawer, takeaway, an actual conversation, sometimes a board game. Free and genuinely made a difference.

Also once a month, babysitting swap with another family on our road. We have theirs one Saturday, they have ours the next.

Lunch dates! Both take a day off while she's at nursery. Cheaper than evenings, you're not knackered, and you don't need a babysitter.

I don't want to be gloomy, but flatmates can drift into something harder to fix if nobody says it out loud. It sounds like you're aware of it, which is great. Maybe say exactly what you said here to him? Sometimes they feel it too and are relieved.

Babysitting swap is the way. We also did a 'nap date' where we put the kids at grandma's and both slept for four hours. Most romantic thing we've done in years.
