Three-day potty training: did it actually work for anyone?

Second time round and I'm dreading it. With my eldest we did it in a slow, drawn out way and it took about five months of accidents.

Everyone keeps telling me to clear a long weekend, ditch the nappies, and go cold turkey. Youngest is 2 years 8 months, talks well, tells me after he's done a wee. Did the three-day thing actually work for you, or did it just mean three days of wee on the floor?

It worked for us but "three days" is marketing. Three days to get the basic idea, three weeks to be reliable, three months before I stopped carrying spare trousers everywhere.

Ours was a disaster because we tried it when she wasn't ready. Stopped, tried again 4 months later and it took about a week. Readiness is everything.

Do it at home, no outings, lots of drinks, potty in the room you're in. Naked from the waist down. Set a timer if you need to. Make a huge celebration over every success and say nothing at all about accidents, just "oops, wees go in the potty" and clean up.

@three_under_five the naked from the waist down thing worries me with our carpets but I suppose they can be cleaned...

Poo was the hard part for us, wees were sorted in days. Took a good couple of months for him to feel safe doing a poo on the potty. Some kids ask for a nappy just for that, and we let him, and it resolved itself.

Back to report: Day 4 and he's dry at home! Had two accidents on day 1, one on day 2, none since. No poos on the potty yet but we're getting there. Thanks all, the rug idea saved my sanity.
