Half term starts Monday. Both of us full time, my partner's in a hospital lab so leave is not flexible, and I'm in an office in Canary Wharf three days a week.

Current plan for our 6 and 9 year olds: Monday and Tuesday with my mum in Lewisham, Wednesday a holiday club at the leisure centre, Thursday I work from home and pray, Friday her dad drives down from Luton.

It works on paper. It always works on paper. What's the bit that usually goes wrong for you, so I can see it coming?

The bit that goes wrong is somebody gets ill on the Sunday night. Ask yourself now which day you'd sacrifice and tell your boss in advance you might need to flip it.

Holiday club day: pack spare clothes, a named water bottle and a lunch they will actually eat. Ours came home starving because I sent something 'healthy and new'.

Speaking from the grandparent end - please tell your mum what the children are allowed and not allowed before Monday, not at the door. Screens, sweets, bedtime if they're staying. We genuinely want to get it right and it's awful finding out afterwards we did something you didn't want.

The working-from-home day with a 6 and 9 year old is the one I'd worry about. Give the 9 year old a 'job' - in charge of lunch, in charge of the little one's film. Mine rises to it about 60% of the time, which is better than 0%.
