Making a list for a friend who's just moved here with two kids and is skint. Places where kids eat free or cheap, cafes that don't mind you bringing a toddler in and nursing one drink for an hour, that kind of thing.

What are your go-tos? No chains you'd have to pay to be featured in, just honest recommendations.

Lots of supermarket cafes do kids eat free or for £1 with an adult meal. Check the timings, it's often after 3pm or weekends.

Children's centres. Often have free stay and play sessions and the staff know every other free thing in the borough.

Our local library has a little cafe and nobody minds if you're there for hours. And it's warm, which in winter is everything.

Swimming: some boroughs have free swimming for under 16s or under 8s. Worth checking her council's leisure centres.
