Can we start a movement for experience or consumable birthday gifts?

My son's 4th birthday party was two weeks ago and our flat is now a plastic graveyard. He got 19 presents. He's played with about three.

For his next one I want to put something on the invite like 'no gifts please, or something consumable if you really want'. Is that rude? Has anyone done it?

Not rude, but people will still bring gifts. What worked for us was suggesting a 'fiver party' where everyone puts £5 in a card and the birthday child buys one bigger thing they really want.

Not a fan of the fiver party personally, it feels a bit like asking for money. I just say 'no gifts necessary' and leave it there.

Consumables we've given and been thanked for: playdough, bubbles, stickers, crayons, bath bombs, a cinema voucher, a baking kit, a trip to the swimming pool. Kids love them and they disappear.

My grandchildren's favourite present from me every year is an 'outing' with grandma. Last year was the train to the seaside. They talk about it far more than any toy.
