Our daughter is 12 and has been doing a Saturday drama club for years. She's now desperate to get an agent and go for auditions for TV and theatre. She's genuinely talented, but I'm wary.

Has anyone been down this road in London? What should I watch out for?

My son was with a children's agency for two years. Watch out for any agency that charges you up front to join or insists on expensive headshots with their own photographer. Legit agencies make money from commission when your child works.

also every child needs a licence from the council for performing, the production usually sorts it with you. the school has to agree to absences too. it can be a lot of admin

My daughter got a small part in a West End show at 11. Amazing experience, but the rehearsal schedule was hard on school. And when the run finished she was very down. Be prepared for that side too.

I'd ask her what she loves about it. If it's performing, there are youth theatres doing fantastic stuff that don't involve the pressure of auditions and rejection.

We've decided to try one reputable agency (no fees!) for a year and see. She's thrilled. Thank you all.
