Settle a debate: is it unreasonable to want the heating on before November?

Right. It's mid October, our flat is 17 degrees in the mornings, I've got a 2 year old and a baby. I want the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour before bath time.

My partner says we agreed "not before November" because of last winter's energy bills and I should put a jumper on the baby. I have put a jumper on the baby. The baby is wearing more layers than an onion.

Who's right? I'll be showing him this thread.

Your partner had a point in 2022 maybe, but with a baby in the house I'd put it on. Babies can't regulate temperature well. An hour twice a day is not going to bankrupt you.

Room for a baby should be around 16 to 20 degrees per the usual safe sleep guidance, so 17 is technically okay but on the edge. I'd do the morning and evening hour and have a look at your smart meter afterwards so he can see what it actually costs. Usually less than people think for short bursts.

We do a dressing gown rule. Everyone gets a big fluffy dressing gown. It helps. It does not help babies though, they need the heating. You win.

Playing devil's advocate here: did you agree November together? If so I can see why he's a bit annoyed you're changing it. Maybe compromise on bathroom and baby's room only with radiator valves turned down elsewhere.
