Why did you decide to have kids? Genuinely curious

My younger sister (29) asked me this over the weekend and I gave a pretty rubbish answer. Something like "it just felt like the next step". She's on the fence and wanted to know what actually tipped it for people.

So I'm asking you lot. Why did you have kids? Honest answers, the good and the not so good.

Honestly, I wanted to see what a mix of me and my husband would look like. That sounds shallow but it's true. And I wanted a big noisy family Sunday lunch when I'm 70.

I didn't think I wanted them. My wife did. I came round to it slowly and now my daughter is the funniest person I know. Not the best advert for 'be sure before you do it', but there you go.

I grew up in a big Irish family and couldn't imagine not having one. That said, I'd tell your sister it's completely fine to not want them. The people who regret it most are those who did it because they felt they should.

Mine are in their forties now. I can tell your sister the best bit wasn't the baby stage, it's now. Having adults you made who choose to come round for tea.

I've looked after other people's children for fifteen years and decided not to have my own. Love kids, love my job, love going home. Your sister should know that's a valid answer too.
