Nanny's perspective: little things at pickup that make the evening harder

Not having a go at anyone, I promise. I've nannied for 12 years in London, mostly for 1-3 year olds, and I see the same pattern almost every evening.

The handover is where it often goes wrong. Parent walks in, kid melts down, parent assumes the child has had a horrible day. They haven't. They've held it together for me all day and you're their safe place.

Things that help: get down to their level and give them five quiet minutes before asking questions. Don't ask me for the full rundown in front of them. Snack ready. Phone away for the first ten minutes.

Would love to hear from parents on what you want from us at handover.

As a parent with a nanny, I really appreciate this. Honestly I'd love a quick summary by text before I get home, so I'm not quizzing you in the hallway with my coat half on.

The meltdown when I walk in used to make me feel like I'd ruined their day by turning up. Hearing it's the opposite helps a lot.

Our nanny told us something similar. We now do 'sofa cuddle' before anything else when we get in. The evenings are noticeably calmer.
